Abstract The geochemical studies showed that the Kharita Formation is poor and immature source rock with kerogen type III and IV, while the AEB Formation is poor to good and immature to marginally mature source rock with kerogen type III and mixed II/III. Palynofacies analysis classified the AEB samples into three associations depending on the depositional environment. The biomarkers for the oil samples indicated that it was derived from mixed marine and terrestrial source rocks deposited under suboxic to anoxic conditions and highly mature source rocks, while the extract samples derived from marine organic matter with little input from plants deposited in anoxic environment and early to highly mature source rocks. There is no correlation between extracts and the oil samples where they are not similar in origin and maturation. |
