Abstract
Giardia lamblia (G. lamblia) represents an important public health problem, especially in the developing countries. It is one of the most common causes of gastrointestinal diseases worldwide. It inhabits the duodenum and jejunum, and its transmission occurs through the faeco-oral route. The clinical manifestations of giardiasis may be asymptomatic, or it may cause acute or chronic diarrhea with abdominal pain, weight loss, intestinal lesions and malabsorption syndrome. Higher susceptibility to Giardia infection has been reported in immunocompromised people, infants and young children affecting the general health of the infected cases causing growth retardation and vitamin deficiency.
