Abstract

Malnutrition is common in chronic liver disease and increases as the severity of liver disease progresses. It affects up to 80% of patients with decompensated cirrhosis.Sarcopenia is a muscle wasting syndrome that is defined by a reduction in muscle mass on cross-sectional imaging. Cirrhosis is a catabolic state in which muscle protein breakdown exceeds synthesis resulting in sarcopenia. Anthropometric measures in cirrhotic patients are affected by altered fluid status caused by ascites, peripheral edema, diuretic, and salt intake.Skinfold thickness that measures subcutaneous fat mass, upper-arm measure of muscle area (midarm muscle area), and subjective global assessment (SGA) which is a gold standard nutrition assessment tool that refers to an overall evaluation of a patient’s history and physical examination and uses structured clinical parameters to diagnose malnutrition.
