Abstract

Metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are two worldwide public health problems because of their increasing prevalence, affecting up to nearly 30% and 15% of the general adult population, respectively. chronic kidney disease is a gradually progressive disease that leads to an irreversible decline in kidney function. In addition, progression of CKD results in end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), requiring replacement therapy, and resulting in premature death. The newly proposed diagnostic criteria for MAFLD are based on the evidence of hepatic steatosis, and the coexistence of overweight/obesity or T2DM; or in lean/normal weight subjects, the presence of hepatic steatosis and the coexistence of two other risk factors related to metabolic dysregulation. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between the severity of chronic kidney disease and metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). This was a cross-sectional study that was carried out at the Internal Medicine Department of Tanta University Hospitals from January 2023 to January 2024 on 60 patients who were suffering from MAFLD and CKD but not undergoing haemodialysis.
