Abstract

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of
hyaluronic acid for management of postoperative edema, trismus and
pain after surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars. The
study was carried out on twenty four adult patients from those who
attended to the outpatient oral surgery clinic in the faculty of Dentistry,
Suez Canal University.
group 1- (control group): there were eight females and four males with
a total of twelve patients. The mean age was
28.6 ± 4.6 years ranged from twenty four to thirty five years.
group 2- (Hyaluronic Acid group): there were seven females and five
males with a total of twelve patients. The mean age was 29.8 ± 4.9 years
ranged from twenty three to thirty five years.
All patients were instructed not to take antibiotics, analgesics and
anti- inflammatory agents at least one day before operation. Duration of
operation was recorded from time of incision to the time of last suture in
minutes.
The following data were collected from each patient:
• Edema was measured by calculating the percentage of increase in
area measurement taking the preoperative measurement as baseline
measurements. This was represented in our study by seven .different
facial lines. These lines were:
• from the tragus of the ear to the lateral border of alaeque nasi
• from the tragus of the ear to the corner of the mouth
• from the tragus of the ear to soft tissue pogonion

Summary & conclusion
• from the angle of the mouth to lateral corner of the eye.
• from the angle of the mouth to lateral border of alaeque nasi.
• from the angle of the mouth to corner of the mouth.
• from the angle of the mouth to soft tissue pogonion.
• Trismus was measured by calculating the interincisal distance
between the mesio-incisal angles of upper central incisor at
maximum mouth opening taking the preoperative measurement as
abaseline for the measurements.
• Pain was recorded by the VAS score.
Postoperative edema, trismus and pain assessment were done at 1st
and 3rd days and after one week.
The statistical analysis of edema revealed that there was a non
significant difference between control group and hyaluronic group in all
postoperative follow up days.
Regarding trismus, no significant differences between the
measurements of interincisal distances between the two groups
throughtout the whole postoperative period were found. Full recovery of
trismus had taken place after one week. Statistical analysis of pain
intensity scores revealed that there was significant difference between the
two groups throughout the whole postoperative period.
