Abstract
Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is the process of replacing patient plasma with autologous or allogeneic plasma.
• The fundamental idea behind TPE is that pathologic processes can be reversed or additional damage can be prevented by eliminating or reducing the amounts of specific pathologic chemicals in the plasma. The pathogenic material could be an immune complex, autoantibody, cryoglobulin, myeloma light chains, endotoxin, lipoprotein that contains cholesterol, or another material.
• Allogeneic (donor) plasma, colloid, or crystalloid, as well as the patient’s own plasma after an undesired substance has been removed, are possible replacement fluids.
