Abstract

This thesis comprises seven chapters. Chapter One introduces the thesis, presenting an overview of the research problem, its objectives, significance, the methodology employed to address the problem, and an outline of the thesis structure. Chapter Two constitutes the first part of the literature review, focusing on the environmental performance and materiality of architecture. Chapter Three continues the literature review, emphasizing contemporary approaches to enhancing construction materials. Chapter Four examines global case studies that explore technological advancements in construction materials and their impact on architectural practices, both environmentally and structurally. Chapter Five elaborates on the methodology used for the theoretical, conceptual, and practical components of the study. Chapter Six details the case study investigated in this thesis, highlighting the potential of basalt fiber to improve the environmental performance of residential buildings in hot and arid climates. Finally, Chapter Seven provides a summary of the thesis and offers recommendations for future research. The construction sector in Jordan is one of the sectors that consume the most natural and non-natural resources in Jordan. As a developing country with limited resources, Jordan ranks 88th on the list of countries with a high urban population density. 91.5% of Jordan’s population lives in urban areas out of only 10% of Jordan’s total territory. This situation translates into sustainability challenges related to managing high population density, which creates pressure on limited resources. The desert makes up 90% of Jordan’s total land area and is the least densely populated area because it does not support the quality of life given its harsh climate. Moreover, the materiality of modern architecture in the Jordanian desert does not match the historical architecture used which relied entirely on locally available materials. As Properly considered materiality influences the geographical historical significance to the cultural and political significance of architecture in each environment. A careful selection of materials for the design can create a healthy, harmonious environment through creating sustainable architecture. A great hope for solving these problems lies in developing Jordan’s deserts filled with local raw materials through innovative thinking. Thus, this study attempts to improve the use of local materials in the Jordanian architectural context by taking the northern Badiah region as a case study. Thus, the current study aims to develop a sustainable house based on enhanced local materials using fiber applications technology. Depending on this goal, this study adopts a mixed approach, starting with the logical argument research and ending with the architectural simulation research. This study revealed that incorporating BFRC within a standard Jordanian house design in Umm Al-Jimal can make a potential advantage in terms of environmental performance aspects. Thus, it can be the seed of creating a sustainable architectural design that can face the current sustainability challenges from an architectural perspective.
