Abstract

The findings of the current study are summarized that:
The mean age of the mothers was29.30± 6.4 years. The vast majority of mothers, 81.7%, came from rural areas and (76%) of them were housewives, and (82%) of the mothers were married. As for educational level, it was found that secondary school-educated mothers were more frequent (35%), while 33.4% were illiterate.
The highest percentage of children their age ranged from 1-5 years, with the mean age being 3.33± 1.8. More than three-quarters of the studied children (78.3%) were males, and 42% ranked as the first child in the family. None of the studied children had suffered from another chronic illness except favism. All of the studied children were not suffering from malaria; it was found that 60% of them had not awareness about their disease.
Regarding children’s past history of favism and their hospitalization in the last six months, 83.3% of children had previous history and hospitalization because of hemolytic attack favism. Moreover, regarding the degree of consanguinity, it was found that 40.6% of their uncle complain of the same disease, 28.2% of their mother complain of the same disease21.8% of their father complain of the same disease.
Regarding children’s past history of hemolytic attack of favism, it reveals that the majority of children (96.7) were exposed to hemolytic attack of favism. Regarding reasons for the attack, more than half of the children (60%) had suffered from hemolytic favism attack because of eating beans; most of the children (90%) received management such as blood transfusion and medications for the favism attack. Most studied children did not suffer from any attack complications (63.3%).
Concerning the clinical manifestations of favism attack, the highest percentages of children (26.6%) had suffered from all manifestations of favism attack, 15% had suffered from Skin and eyes yellowish only, and 15% had suffered from paleness of the face.
Distribution of severity of anemia among studied children. It was found that severe anemia represented 53.3% and moderate anemia represented 36.7%, while mild anemia represented 10% with Mean ± SD value for hemoglobin level (7.19± 2.15). The mean ± SD value for Glucose hexaphosphate dehydrogenase ratio was 253.35± 113.73.
The current study result revealed that 66.7% of the mothers had unsatisfactory knowledge while 10% had satisfactory knowledge about favism.
The vast majority of mothers, 63.4%, had malpractice about favism, while 33.3% of mothers reported practices were fair, and 3.3% had good practices about favism.
There was a relation between the studied sample personal characteristics and the total score of the mother’s knowledge. It indicates that 75% of mothers with poor total knowledge scores were observed among mothers under 20yrs. 83.3% of mothers with poor total scores of knowledge were observed among mothers who have primary School, and 72.7% of the mother’s residences in urban have poor total scores of knowledge. 83.3% of divorced mothers have poor total scores of knowledge.
There was a relation between the studied sample personal characteristics and the total score of mother’s practices. It indicates that 100% of mothers have poor total scores of practices observed among mothers aged more than 40 years. 100% of mothers with poor total scores of practices were observed among mothers with higher education, and 81.8% of the mothers from urban have poor scores of practices. 63.3% of married mothers have poor total scores of practices.
A positive statistically significant correlation was found between the total scores of mothers’ knowledge and practice (r=0.70, P.value= 0.001).
