Abstract

Reconstruction of the foot plantar soft tissue defect with durable tissue which can offer productive life to the patient is still challenging. The skin of the sole is thickened for a protective function. The weight-bearing foot is capable of withstanding significant compressive forces because of its thickness and deformability. Defects in this region can occur due to trauma, burns, tumor excision, or trophic ulcer. In the case of superadded infections, it may potentially lead to secondary amputation. A large soft-tissue defect with exposed bone, tendon, neurovascular structures, and/or surgical hardware requires coverage with distant tissue. Though the specific flap chosen may vary, there are two constituent options: Fasciocutaneous flaps can provide a thin, pliable tissue that is easily contoured and can be neurotized, but have a high modulus of shear in the subcutaneous plane, causing instability when mobilizing.
