Abstract

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is highly widespread among youngsters, making it one of the most common mental diseases. ADHD is characterized by impulsivity, hyperactivity, and inattention. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of methylphenidate on the behavior of children with ADHD during dental treatment. ADHD is a chronic and debilitating illness that impacts several aspects of a person’s life.
The current study recruited patients from the outpatient clinic of the pediatric and community dentistry department at Minia University dental hospital. A total of twenty patients in each group, aged between 4 and 8 years, were selected to form two equally sized groups: group A administered methylphenidate (MPH), but group B did not get it. Two cohorts underwent inferior alveolar nerve block, followed by pulpotomy and placement of stainless-steel crowns on their primary lower molars. Within the drug group, the medication was administered to the child one hour prior to the dental procedure. Subjective assessment of behavior will be conducted using the Frankl Behavior Rating Scale after administering local anesthetic and doing cavity preparation.
The findings unveiled the subsequent information:
1- There is no significant variation in the distribution of age and sex between the two groups.
There was no statistically significant variation in the distribution of ADHD categories between the two groups.
3- In group (A), there was a substantial statistical correlation between behavior and the kind of ADHD. All patients with ADHD who had hyperactive symptoms displayed negative behavior, whereas patients with inattentive and mixed symptoms demonstrated positive conduct. In the control group (B), there was no statistically significant correlation between behavior and ADHD type, with majority of the three kinds exhibiting negative conduct.
4- There was a considerable statistical disparity in conduct between the two groups, with group A exhibiting a higher frequency of positive activity.
