Abstract

Abstract
Background: Bronchial asthma is a common serious chronic pulmonary disease affects millions of people worldwide. Buteyko Breathing Technique (BBT) is suggested as an effective complementary therapy for bronchial asthma that decreases severity & improve control of symptoms and overall patient outcomes. This study aimed to: examine the effectiveness of implementing Buteyko breathing technique on clinical outcomes among patients with bronchial asthma. Design: Quasi-experimental research design was utilized in this study (case and control). Setting: This study was conducted in Chest department at Benha and Menoufia University Hospitals, Egypt. Subjects: purposive sample of 50 patients with bronchial asthma, were divided into two groups; 25 for Buteyko group and 25 for control group. Tools; four tools were utilized; Tool I: Structured questionnaire for personal and medical data, Tool II Bronchial asthma severity assessment sheet, Tool III: Bronchial asthma control assessment sheet and Tool IV: ST-Georgie Respiratory Questionnaire. Results: the study results showed that 52% & 32% of Buteyko & control groups respectively had moderate asthma pre implementation of Buteyko breathing technique, which decreased to 32% & 40% after its implementation. In addition, 52% & 84% of them respectively expressed uncontrolled asthma pre implementation compared to 32% & 44% respectively after BBT implementation. Regarding the effect of airway limitation on general health, it was reported that there was significant decrease after BBT. Conclusion: Buteyko Breathing Technique (BBT) is easy to be practiced breathing Technique, that has significant effect on improving bronchial asthma severity of symptoms such as day time and night time symptoms, level of activity and decreases use of rescue medications, improving bronchial asthma control as well as psycho-social health related airway limitation impacts, especially in adults with intermittent to moderate bronchial asthma. Recommendations: All patients with bronchial asthma should be trained for Buteyko Breathing Technique as a daily routine breathing exercise along with traditional treatment modalities to improve control of bronchial asthma symptoms and decrease its severity.
