Abstract

The objective of this study was to design a computer program for designing a photovoltaic (PV) solar system. The program takes into account the following input parameters: the project site, which determines the available solar radiation throughout the year, whether the system is stand-alone or grid-connected, and the user’s choice of using a fixed or tracking system. The proposed program in this work enables one to calculate the Photovoltaic (PV) array and battery sizes for a given load at any place worldwide. The program allows the user to choose either a fixed or tracking system. The program also allows the choice between a stand-alone and a grid-connected system. The data required are the latitude of the site and load profile only.
The program only requires the latitude of the site and allows users to calculate the optimal size of a Photovoltaic PV array and battery for a given load at any location across the globe. The program offers the flexibility to choose between a fixed or tracking system, as well as a stand-alone or grid-connected system. The program only requires the latitude of the site and the load profile as input data. For instance, the results presented in this study for example, Paris France (latitude 49.01 N), Tema Ghana (latitude 5.62 N), Cairo (latitude 30 N), London (latitude 51.54 N), and Dakar Senegal (latitude 14.74 N). The program gives the array size, battery size, system reliability, initial system cost, cost per kWh generated, and the economic analysis if the system cost is borrowed from a commercial bank.
Compared to the available software tools to design PV systems, this work adds the system reliability versus cost as well as economic analysis if the system cost is borrowed from a bank.
