Abstract

Since the publication of her first novel, Tyler shows a continuing concern in the details of familial relationships and the simultaneous reactions of the person within the domestic situation. This study attempts to provide a needed thorough supplement to the earlier discussions that handle Tyler’s fictional production. Furthermore, it tries to prove that Tyler’s greatest strength as a fiction writer lies in her ability to create, explore, and develop her characters. In a large measure, difficult relationships between the characters in Tyler’s novels arise from their troubled childhoods. The main purpose of this study is to reveal how Anne Tyler’s characters reflect many characteristics of Karen Horney’s psychoanalytic theory of neuroses. This study argues that Tyler’s characters reflect the many characteristics which Horney systemizes in her theory. Before her death in 1952, Horney had completed the most sophisticated formulation and revision of her theory in her book Neurosis and Human Growth: The Struggle Toward Self Realization. Endurance of Tyler’s characters toward restrictive familial situations reveals their adaptation of Horney’s behavioral styles discussed in her theory; namely, moving toward people, moving away from people, or moving against people. The dissertation follows a qualitative thematic method based mainly on the analysis of Tyler’s selected novels. Thematic analysis is an appropriate method because of the raised questions about the comprehensive and complex revelation of psychoanalytically oriented facts about characters could be answered through it.
