Abstract

Aim: The objective of the current study was to evaluate the survival rate following
TheraCal PT pulpotomy compared to MTA pulpotomy in pediatric patients with primary
molars indicated for vital pulpotomy.
Methodology: Twenty patients were recruited for the current pilot randomized
clinical study. Patients were divided into two groups: group I for TheraCal PT (n=10) and
group II for MTA (n=10). All patients were subjected to baseline, 3, and 6-month follow-ups.
The primary outcome included evaluating the clinical survival rate regarding spontaneous
pain and the formation of swelling. The secondary outcomes utilized the radiographic
assessment regarding widening in periodontal membrane space, periapical radiolucency,
furcation involvement, external/internal root restoration, and Time elapsed from the
beginning of hemostasis till the final restoration placement was recorded.
Results: After six months, both materials exhibited a 100% survival rate for the
clinical parameters tested (spontaneous pain and swelling). The clinical assessment showed
no statistically significant difference between MTA and TheraCal PT groups. Radiographic
assessments have shown a 90% success rate for the MTA group and a 40% success rate for
the Theracal PT group. The overall inter-observer agreement (Kappa score) for clinical and
radiographic assessments has shown near-perfect agreement between observers (κ = 0.97).
Conclusion: MTA and Theracal PT medications had an excellent clinical success rate
of 100% during the follow-up period; moreover, MTA revealed more radiographic success
rate than Theracal PT (90% and 40% respectively).
