Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease that arises more frequently in females than males, primarily affects the lining of the synovial joints and is associated with progressive disability, premature death, and socioeconomic burdens. It is characterized by a progressive symmetric inflammation of affected joints resulting in cartilage destruction, bone erosion, and disability. The aim of our study was to measure the level of apoptosis inhibitor of macrophage (AIM) in the serum of RA patients and correlate this level with clinically and radiologically evaluated disease activity and severity parameters. This study was carried out on 120 subjects were divided into three groups; group (A) 60 patients diagnosed as RA, group (B) 30 patients diagnosed as OA, group(C) 30 apparently healthy subjects with matched age and sex to the previous groups. Patients were recruited from the Rheumatology, Rehabilitation and Physical medicine out patient‟s clinic and in patient department of Benha University Hospitals. All subjects below 18 years old, with other autoimmune diseases, infectious disorders, fibromyalgia, cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal, endocrine or neuropsychiatric disorders were excluded.
