Abstract

The study aimed to spot the light upon the public health significance and the zoonotic importance of toxoplasmosis in Menoufia Governorate. A total of 50 sera and 50 blood samples were collected from 50 adult sheep of Baladi breed (30 from Kafr Tanbidi and 20 from Shebein El-Kom) and a total of 31 cattle milk samples were collected from different localities in Shebein El-Kom. Sheep sera were examined by ELISA IgG to evaluate Toxoplasma prevalence among sheep and recorded 60% (30/50) were IgG positive with 66.67% (20/30) were positive in Kafr Tanbidi and 50% (10/20) in Shebein El-Kom. PCR recorded 22% (11/50) were positive with 20% (6/30) were positive in Kafr Tanbidi and 25% (5/20) in Shebein El-Kom. PCR was also carried out on cattle milk samples to shed a light on the role of milk in acquiring toxoplasmosis, it resulted in 19.35% (6/31) were positive for Toxoplasma DNA. The study also involved estimation of Toxoplasma prevalence among 250 women in age of (18-40 years) selected in the period from June 2014 to August 2015 from various clinic laboratories in Shebein El-Kom, Menoufia Governorate with assessment of the possible risk factors for acquiring toxoplasmosis. 54.4% (136/250) were IgG positive while 8.4% (21/250) were IgM positive. There was a significant association between IgG seroprevalence and age, gravidity, presence of abortion, cat contact and consumption of raw cow milk, undercooked meat and contaminated water from wells, climate and between IgM seroprevalence and age, presence of abortion and climatic conditions prevailed during sampling.
