Abstract

Worldwide, hepatocellular carcinoma is the fifth of the most frequent cancers and the second of the leading causes of deaths due to cancer in males. In women, it is considered the seventh most common cancer and the sixth of the leading causes of deaths related to cancer In Egypt, the frequency of liver-related cancers in hospital-based studies is increasing over time. Several staging systems were developed for classification of hepatocellular carcinoma patients but none has specifically been developed for predicting outcomes of therapy. Transarterial chemoembolization has become the most popular modality for treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma However, patients who are candidate for Transarterial chemoembolization includes a wide spectrum in terms of liver function and extent of tumor, and this may explain the large differences in individual series reported survival and response In the current study we assessed the prognostic factors for response in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma underwent Trans arterial chemoembolization with special emphasis on ART and HAP scores. The study enrolled 100 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma underwent Transarterial chemoembolization Majority of patients were males and were on the 6th decade of life. We found that 22% and 78% of patients had achieved non-objective and objective response, respectively Majority of patients who achieved objective response were females, had significantly higher albumin and hemoglobin level with low risk ART and HAP class < C. with multivariate regression analysis we found that predictors of non-objective response were low risk ART score and HAP score> C.
