Abstract

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a viral infection caused by
severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type-2 (SARS-CoV-2) that was
first reported from Wuhan in central China in December 2019. In a short span
of 5 months, it has spread to almost all the countries around the world, resulting
in the ongoing 2019-20 coronavirus pandemic. The World Health Organization
(WHO) declared it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on
January 30, 2020, and a pandemic on March 11, 2020 (179)
.
The most frequent symptoms in mild and moderate cases of Covid-19
were fever, anosmia and shortness of breath, which appears to be more frequent
in adults than children, as well as cough, dyspnea, myalgia and headache
among other clinical features. The most common laboratory abnormalities
included increased value of C-reactive protein, lactate dehydrogenase, D-dimer
and lymphopenia in more than 40% of patients (180)
.
Health care workers are the backbone of health systems. A healthy and
skilled workforce is the basic requirement to ensure health community, and this
is even more important during crisis such as COVID-19 pandemic. It is also
important that HCWs should have good knowledge about the disease and
practice preventive measures to protect themselves and the community at large.
This level of knowledge of HCWs about the disease could be one of the
contributory factors control of the disease (181)
.
Being a newly discovered virus, knowledge, attitude, and practice vary as
regards the members of the medical team. Studies regarding knowledge,
attitude and practice of HCPs about COVID-19 have been done in other
countries, studies from China have reported high level of knowledge among
HCWs and majority of them had received training about COVID-19, based on
previous studies, reinforcement policy can be made for them to treat patients while protecting themselves effectively, thus the study aims to evaluate the
knowledge and attitude of HCWs towards COVID-19 in Egypt (182)
.
The objective of this investigation is to assess the level of COVID-19
knowledge , attitude and practice among HCWs in Egypt.
This cross-sectional study involved a sample size of 365 individuals
comprising medical professionals physicians, nurses, and laboratory
technicians. The study spanned from August 2021 to August 2023, with the
aim of evaluating the knowledge, attitude, and practice of the medical team in
relation to the COVID-19 pandemic. The study subjects were divided into three
distinct categories: physicians, nurses, and laboratory technicians. A
comparative analysis was carried out to examine the various factors assessed
within these groups.
