Abstract

Nurses are important members in maintaining the quality of the hospitals and the health care environment. They need power to be able to seize opportunities to apply their skills and knowledge creatively. Empowering nurses contributes to improving their attitudes and increasing organizational effectiveness, enabling them to achieve both personal and organizational goals. It also helps them to achieve one of their most important roles and obligations, which is patient advocacy, thus protecting patient rights (Binfon and Ngunyi, 2020). Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess empowerment and its relation to patient advocacy responsibility as perceived by staff nurses. The research question of this study Is there a relationship between empowerment and patient advocacy responsibility as perceived by staff nurses?
This descriptive correlational design was conducted at Ashmoun General Hospital, affiliated to the Ministry of Health. It included its critical and non-critical departments. A sample of 169 staff nurses working in the settings was randomly selected. The data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire with two tools namely; Staff Nurses Empowerment Questionnaire (Conditions for Work Effectiveness Questionnaire), and a questionnaire for nurses’ perception of their responsibility for patient’ rights advocacy.
The tool was face and content validated by Faculty members in Nursing Administration, their reliability measured, and then pilot-tested. The fieldwork of this study was from the beginning September to the end of October 2022.
The main study findings were as follows.
 Staff nurses’ age ranged between 20 and 52 years, median 29.0 years, mostly females (95.3%), with diploma degree (92.9%). Their median experience was 8.0 years.
 The empowerment area with the highest percentage (60.9%) was that of support, while the area of resources was the lowest (50.9%).
 Overall, 53.8% of the staff nurses in the study sample had high total empowerment.
 The majority of the staff nurses (86.4%) had a high perception of patient rights.
 Most (75.7%) staff nurses had a high perception of patient rights advocacy.
 Significantly less bachelor’s degree staff nurses and those working in critical care had high empowerment related to resources.
 No statistically significant relations were revealed between staff nurses’ perception of patient rights or advocacy and any of their characteristics.
 A significant weak positive correlation was found between staff nurses’ scores of patient rights and advocacy (r=0.282).
 A weak positive correlation with borderline significance (p=0.1) was found between the scores of empowerment and advocacy.
 In multivariate analysis, the patient rights score was a positive predictor of staff nurses’ patient rights advocacy score.
