Abstract

The present study was conducted in the neuropsychiatry department of Menoufia university hospitals, where forty heroin addict males were admitted inpatient. The male patients did have cognitive behavioural therapy sessions for treatment and prevention of relapse of heroin addiction.
Assessment scales were applied to the patients pre- and post-CBT sessions. And blood withdrawn for measuring serum level of BDNF both pre- and post-CBT. Barret impulsivity scale and attentional, motor and nonplanning subscales were all assessed. Perceived stress scale was assessed and scored.
All participants had higher levels of impulsivity including attention, motor and nonplanning. They had been more stressed, and all had their serum level of BDNF lower.
After CBT, participants significantly improved impulsivity, in the three domains; attentional, motor and nonplanning. The perceived stress scale score decreases in all the participants. The serum levels of BDNF showed significant increase.
The main results of this study showed that:
Forty male patients consented to participate in the study and completed CBT. The 40 male-identified participants ranged in age from 20 to 42 years (M = 31, SD =6.6). Based on Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID-I), all the male patients met criteria for Heroin addiction for which CBT is an indicated treatment and excluded for co-morbid psychiatric disorders and complications of abuse and dependence.

Scores on the BIS were examined before and after completion of CBT.
To maintain statistical power and control for individual factors through
pairing, paired sample t-tests were used to measure mean changes.
Before CBT, the mean of the BIS total score was 66, 03 (SD = 10.7).
After completion of CBT, the mean total BIS score was 49.9 (SD =9.6),
showsing a significant decline in Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (p ≤ 0.05)
All BIS subscales showsed change in the expected direction, yielded a
significant decline in Attentional, Motor, and non-planning
impulsiveness subscales. Prior to CBT, the mean score on the
Attentional subscale in patients was 15.7 (SD =3.05), Motor subscale
was 23.2 (SD = 4.6), and the Attentional subscale showsed a significant
decline to 12.4 (SD = 3.1, p ≤ 0.05), Motor subscale to 17.9 (SD =4.6, p
≤ 0.05), and non-planning subscale to 19.6 (SD = 4.7, p ≤ 0.05).
Scores on the PSS were examined before and after completion of CBT.
To maintain statistical power and control for individual factors through
pairing, paired sample t-tests were used to measure mean changes.
Before CBT, the mean of the PSS score was 31.7 (SD =4.9). After
completion of CBT, the mean PSS score became 24.7(SD =3.8),
showsing a significant decrease in PSS (p < 0.05).
Concentrations of the BDNF were measured before and after completion
of CBT. To maintain statistical power and control for individual factors
through pairing, paired sample t-tests were used to calculate mean
changes. Before CBT, the mean of the BDNF Concentration was 1.3
ng/ml (SD = 0.64). After completion of CBT, the mean of the BDNF
Concentration became 2.2 ng/ml (SD = 1.5), showsing a significant
increase in BDNF concentration.
This Table showss that there is statistically significant correlation of age
with improvement in BIS score before and after CBT.

This study shows that there is no statistically significant difference in attention score of BIS before & after treatment
This study shows that there was no statistically significant difference in motor score of BIS before & after treatment in relation to age
This study shows that there was statistically significant difference in non-planning of BIS score before & after treatment in relation with age
This study shows that there is no statistically significant difference in BIS score before & after treatment in relation to marital status
This study shows that there is no statistically significant difference in BIS score before & after treatment in relation to educational level
This study shows that there was no statistically significant difference in BIS Score before & after treatment in relation to employment status
This study shows that there was no statistically significant difference in addiction severity score before & after CBT treatment in relation to employment
Based on these results, recommendation for further studies on larger patients and longer period of follow up to emphasize these results.
