Abstract

A
geing is a global phenomenon with the number of persons 60 years and over. Estimated to reach two billion by the year 2050; for some persons, living longer is accompanied by challenges of disability and being dependent on others to assist with everyday tasks. Already, 101 million people 60 years and over worldwide are estimated to be care-dependent. Elderly caregivers should have the opportunity to perform their practices by professional way on a day-to-day basis as an integral part of elderly care (James, et al., 2021).
Aim of the study:
The aim of the study is to evaluate the nursing intervention program to improve the caregivers’ practices of elderly care at geriatric homes through:
• Assessing care givers’ knowledge about elderly care.
• Assessing care givers’ practices toward elderly care.
• Assessing factors leading to stress to caregivers and influence the pattern of care provided to the elderly.
• Assessing caregivers’ coping with stress
• Designing and implementing nursing intervention program to improve the care givers’ practices toward elderly care at geriatric homes.
• Evaluating the effectiveness of nursing intervention program to improve the care giver’ practices of elderly at geriatric homes.
Research Hypotheses:
The study hypotheses that implementing a nursing intervention program will improve the care givers’ practices toward elderly care at geriatric homes and improve their coping with stress.
Research Design:
A quasi experimental study design was used in this study
Technical Design:
The technical design includes; the setting, subject & tools were used in the study.
Setting:
This study was conducted on half number of districts in Cairo governorate, and select two geriatric homes of each district that more density in the following geriatric homes which located at Cairo governorate and these settings were chosen because they serve the community around Ain Shams University. where those are; Dar mosenat alkarma &Agaez aramel ahkarma (Shobra), Mosenen and mosenat alkelma altaeba & alqs wahba (Alsahel), Facility of mosenen saman elshikh & Facility of mosenat sanea elkhairat (Rod el farag), Dar anwar almostafa & Dar mosenen alrahman (Almataria), Botros ghaly for elderly & Ever green (Alwaily),Dar Mosenen and mosenat el hadi aleslamy (Alsharabia), Dar Mosenen yom almostashfiat & Dar Mosenen alkhairia aleslamia (alsaida zainab).
Sampling:
A convenient sample was used in this study. The total numbers of elderly caregivers who work in the previous mentioned setting were 73 person and pilot study it was chosen and carried out on 13 person whom & excluded later the study sample. The sample became 60 persons for both genders (male & female), 10 persons from each geriatric home, elderly caregiver from 20 to 60 years old. Work at geriatric homes and accepting to participate in the study program.
Tools for data collection: Four tools were used for data collection.
-First tool: Interviewing Questionnaire developed by the investigator to assess the following: (Appendix I).
Part 1: Care givers’ demographic characteristics of elderly caregivers include age, gender, education, marital status, health condition of elderly cared by caregivers and health condition of elderly cared by care givers(preprogram).
Part 2: Care givers’ knowledge about elderly care (pre & post program implementation)
-Second tool: Reported practices through self-assessment tool (pre & post program implementation) (Appendix II).
-Third tool: Factors causing stress to care givers (preprogram implementation) (Appendix III).
-Fourth tool: Caregivers coping with stress (pre & post program implementation) (Appendix IV).
Pilot study:
It was conducted for 13 elderly caregivers to test the content, clarity and time needed to fill the tool as a pre-test. According to pilot study no modification done. So, the pilot study sample was excluded from the study sample.
The finding of the present study could be summarized as follows:
 Elderly caregivers who receive the health educational program exhibit high scores in knowledge & practices related to elderly care at geriatric home than before the program implementation with statistically significant difference.
 Also, accordance to the total elderly caregivers’ coping with stress pre/post program implementation there was a very highly significant difference between caregivers’ coping with stress regarding being confrontive pre& post program implementation.
 Emphasis that there was a very highly statistically significant relation between elderly caregivers’ total knowledge about of the elderly at geriatric homes post program implementation with level of education.
 Furthermore, it was found that there was very highly statistically significant relation between elderly caregivers’ total practices toward care of the elderly post program implementation with their age and level of education.
The finding of the present study, suggested the following recommendations:
 Provide culturally appropriate health educational programs for promoting elderly caregivers’ practices at geriatric homes regarding their knowledge & practices toward normal physiological changes related to aging process, daily care for elderly and first aids for emergency cases.
 Encourage multidisciplinary researches in the same study in order to cover large group of elderly caregivers in different places.
 Provide elderly caregivers with educational materials as books, pamphlets and videos to increase their awareness about elderly care at geriatric homes.
 Increase training courses in geriatric homes and encourage elderly caregivers to use first aids bag in emergency cases.
 Effectively address the issue of caregiver´s burden during caring for elderly with chronic illness and problematic behavior.
Further Researches on:
 Investigate contributing factors of improving elderly caregivers’ practices to improve their understanding and awareness.
 Conduct experimental research on coping strategies for caregivers to improve elderly care.
 The impact of self-efficacy on training and guidance methods, goal setting practices.
 Apply the study on large sample for generalization of the results
