Abstract

Organizational silence in organizations is an important factor that affects individual, team, and organizational-level performance preventing individual and organizational learning additionally adversely affecting decision making while causing problems for nurses’ well-being and impairing their organizational learning. New administrative techniques focus on making nurses strong, enabling open communication within organizations, and adopting the view of nurses making an effort to be competent (yang et al., 2022). Purpose of the study: The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relation between organizational silence and organizational learning among nurses at Quesna Central Hospital. Research questions:- What is the level of organizational silence among staff nurses at Quesna Central Hospital? - What is the level of organizational learning among staff nurses at Quesna Central Hospital? - What is the relation between organizational silence and organizational learning among nurses? - What is the relation between organizational silence and organizational learning with the personal characteristics of staff nurses?Methods:Design; A descriptive correlational research design was used. Setting; inpatient, outpatient, and critical care units at Quesna Central Hospital. Sample; convenience sampling technique of 200 nurses out of 386 nurses.Instruments; Instrument One, organizational silence scale, and Instrument Two, organizational learning scale.Results:The result of the study revealed that;- The highest percentage of staff nurses were females, married, and between age groups 25 to less than 35 years old. Nearly one-third of them had bachelor’s degrees in nursing and had less than 5 years of experience. Also, the highest percentage of staff nurses were working in the neonate intensive care unit.- Most staff nurses had a moderate level of organizational silence followed by a low level of organizational silence and a high level of organizational silence. The highest mean was in the subordinate’s fear of negative reactions dimension while the lowest mean was in support of the supervisor for silence dimension.- Nearly two-thirds of staff nurses reported that organizational learning was at a moderate level followed by a low level of organizational learning and a high level of organizational learning. The highest mean was in the dynamics of learning dimension while the lowest mean was in the application of technology dimension.- There was a highly statistically significant negative correlation between total organizational silence and total organizational learning among nurses.- There was a statistically significant relation between total organizational silence among nurses and the age of studied participants. However, there was no statistically significant relation between total organizational silence among nurses and marital status, gender, nursing educational levels, years of experience, and working unit.- There was a highly statistically significant relation between total organizational learning among nurses and their educational levels, their gender, and working unit. However, there was no statistically significant relation between total organizational learning among nurses and age, marital status, and years of experience.In conclusion; organizational silence and organizational learning were at a moderate level, and there was a highly statistically significant negative correlation between total organizational silence and total organizational learning among nurses. There was a statistically significant relation between total organizational silence and the age of studied participants also, there was a highly statistically significant relation between total organizational learning among nurses and their educational levels, their gender, and working unit.So, it is recommended that;At the practical level:• Hospital and nursing administrators should maintain a good practice environment for nurses that welcomes suggestions, and opinions and supports learning throughout the organization. • Creating a suitable organizational structure that provides the opportunity for feedback and bottom-up relationships for nurses.At the educational level:• Educational workshops are recommended for managers and nurses about the causes and effects of organizational silence and increase awareness of organizational learning.At research level:• Replicate the study with a larger sample of nurses from different healthcare organizations to ascertain the generalization of the findings.
