Abstract

Intestinal obstruction in children is a partial or complete blockage that
prevents food or liquid from passing through intestine. Aim: this study aimed to assess
knowledge and practices of pediatric nurses about pre and postoperative care of Intestinal
obstruction. Design: A descriptive correlational research design was utilized. Sample:
All available nurses (90 nurse) who are working in neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric
intensive care unit and surgery department and caring of children suffering from
intestinal obstruction. Tools of Data Collection: Two tools were used for data collection;
A structured interview questionnaire sheet and observational checklists. Results: all
studied nurses had unsatisfactory knowledge about intestinal obstruction in children in
addition to the majority of them had incompetent practice and there was no a statistical
significant correlation between total nurses’ knowledge and their total practices.
Conclusion: the study concluded that all studied nurses had unsatisfactory level of
knowledge and the majority of them had incompetent level of practice about pre and
postoperative care of intestinal obstruction in children. There was no a statistical
significant correlation between total nurses’ knowledge and their total practices, adding to
there was no a statistical significant relationship between studied nurses’ demographic
characteristics and their total practices. Recommendation: the study recommended that,
training educational programs and workshops regarding pre and postoperative care of
intestinal obstruction should be provided to pediatric nurses working in neonatal
intensive care unit, pediatric intensive care unit and surgery department and instituting
pediatric surgery department with nurses specialized in pediatric surgery nursing.
