Abstract This study showed a significant association between low serum ferritin level as a representative of iron status and hair loss in females with chronic telogen effluvium. Also a significant decrease of serum ferritin level was detected with the increase in disease severity. Therapeutic iron supplementation in CTE patients with low serum ferritin level less than 10 ng/ml showed significant improvement of disease severity & decrease of telogen phase by trichogram. Therefore screening to establish serum ferritin level may be of value in evaluation of menstruating women with CTE and supplementation therapy when deficient may be beneficial in treatment. Further double-blinded controlled studies of therapeutic iron supplementation in healthy CTE women with serum ferritin levels more than10 ng/ml are recommended . It is recommended to evaluate serum ferritin level than hemoglobin level to assess the iron status in a case of diffuse telogen hair loss. |
