Abstract

The objective of this study is to conduct a comparative analysis of the postoperative outcomes associated with mushroom FLAK and suction trephination assisted PKP. In this prospective non-randomized study, a total of thirty eyes of thirty patients were recruited, comprising of seventeen males and thirteen females. The age range of the participants varied from 18 to 65 years old.
The participants were enrolled from the ophthalmology outpatient clinic at Minia University Hospital, Minia and Dar el Oyon Hospital, located in Sheikh Zaid City. All patients included in the study were candidates for PKP, with the exception of those with recurrent cases and extensive corneal vascularization. Patients are categorized to two groups: suction trephination assisted PKP group and mushroom FLAK group. Both groups were composed of fifteen eyes.
Prior to the surgical procedure, a comprehensive ophthalmological assessment was conducted on all patients. The subjects are then assessed for BCVA , pentacam and specular microscopy examinations are conducted at the 6-month and 12-month after surgery.
The study findings indicate that the mushroom FLAK group exhibited a statistically significant increase in BCVA compared to the suction trephination assisted PKP group at both the 6-month and 12-month follow-up periods.
Additionally, the mushroom FLAK group had lower levels of topographic astigmatism and CV compared to the suction trephination assisted PKP group at these time points.
Furthermore, a statistically significant difference was observed in the central corneal thickness and CV between the 6-month and 12-month in the mushroom FLAK group.
