Abstract Background: Corneal Opacity due to trachoma is a common sequalae either due to chronic inflammation of the conjunctiva or due to cicatricial entropion that leads to continuous rubbing of the lashes against the cornea, and this is the main cause of visual impairment and may end by blindness Methods: It was a cross sectional study that included patients having chronic trachoma presenting to Fayoum University Hospital to study the characteristics of trachomatous corneal opacity using anterior segment OCT and Pentacam during the period between February to August 2022 Results: for the patients who had opacity in the right eye 70% of them had central corneal opacity, while18% of them had superior opacity, while for the patients who had opacity in the left eye, and 66.67% of them had central opacity, 22.92% of them had superior opacity, The highest degree of corneal opacity was observed among patients with both trichiasis and entropion. For anterior segment OCT the mean anterior corneal power was (49.95±3.36), and for posterior corneal power the mean was (-5.99±1.86) for corneal thickness; the central corneal thickness was (541.36±64.95) and the thinnest location thickness was (511.88±56.33) ,By pentacam the mean anterior corneal power was (45.41±2.099), and for posterior corneal power the mean was -7.15±6.38) for corneal thickness; the central corneal thickness was (502.88±85.81) and the thinnest location thickness was (455.43±93.97). Conclusion: Trachoma causes central corneal opacity in most of the cases and to less extent it causes a superior opacity and the presence of entropion and trichiasis increase the chance of the presence of corneal opacity For the AS-OCT and Pentacam there`s a statistical significant difference in corneal thickness measure And a statistically significant difference in anterior corneal power measurements were found when assessed by the two devices but no significant difference in posterior corneal power, Also with the increase in the density of the opacity the pentacam wrongly diagnosed the patient to have keratoconus so it`s not considered a reliable diagnostic tool for keratoconus in the presence of corneal opacity. |
