Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted to compare between two different scales of screening of postpartum depression (EPDS-10 vs. EPDS-5) among peripartum women attending Mansoura University Hospital. Materials and methods : This study is a cross-sectional study conducted on 394 cases at Obstetrics & Gynecology department at Mansoura university hospital over one year period from 2021 to August 2022, patients were interviewed and assessed for their socioeconomic level and asked about their obstetric history, medical history and psychological history. Participants were then asked to complete the depression screening scale questionnaire. Then their answers were evaluated for the possibility of postpartum depression and the degree of correlation between The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), a 10-item scale, and two types of the EPDS DEP 5 scale. Results & Conclusions: The prevalence of postpartum depression according to EPDS- 10 was 17.8 % , EPDS – 5 first. scale was 17 % and EPDS – 5 second scale was 17.25 %. The EPDS - 5 is a valid abbreviated form that possesses excellent psychometric qualities and may be used in questionnaire studies in place of the full version for some scientific purposes. with less information loss when compared to the original EPDS. Since the EPDS-Dep-5 takes up minimal space, it can be used in large-scale health surveys. where assessing depression should be a regular practice, and it can also be used as a routine screening tool for PPD in busy clinical settings. Keywords: postpartum period, peripartum psychiatric problems, postpartum depression, Edinburgh postpartum screening scale, simplified Edinburgh screening scale.
