Abstract Background: Each year nearly 7.7 million children under five years die around the world; out of which approximately 3.1 million of the newborns die during the neonatal period and almost all these (99%) deaths occur in the developing countries. According to the World Health Organization’s estimation neonatal deaths account for 45% of the under- five deaths. More than one-third of these deaths occur in the first 24 h of birth, whereas three-quarter of the neonatal deaths takes place in the first seven days of birth. The purpose of this study is to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practices among mothers in fayoum governorate. Methods : Across -sectional study will include 400 mothers in Fayoum governorate. Newborn care knowledge and attitude will be observed among 400 mothers. Structured interview questionnaire will be used to collect the data. Conclusion: Maternal knowledge and practice about new born care play vital roles in prevention of neonatal death. Some socio demographic factors may bear associations with the knowledge and practice of the mothers. Educating the mothers and also their family members plays a pivotal role. Results : mean age of the mother s was 28.4 ± 5.2 with range between 18-40 years. As regards occupation, most of the mothers60.0%were not working. Less than half (43.5%) were illiterate or had primary education,. Near half of the participants (51.0%) were from rural area. About half of mothers (48.0%) reported that they visited the prenatal clinic. Majority of them 170/180 (94.4%) received message on II breast feeding followed by umbilical cord care (55.6%), received anti- tetanus toxoid during this or previous pregnancy Most mothers reported that their neonates (68.0%) had delivered by CS. As regards the attitude of mothers about dangerous sign of the neonate, most of mothers specified appositive attitude with a percentage over 50%in all topics. Most of mothers stated the true answers with a percentage over 60%in all points except for two questions about; after birth warming and appropriate time of bathing.
