Abstract

Hip replacement (HR) became one of the most popular procedures in orthopedic surgery that exerts immediate therapeutic effect and the number of patients requiring hip replacement continuously increasing because of many factors especially demogra phi changes and life style trends (El Shemey & Elsaay, 2015). So pre and post nursing intervention can improve patient’s compliance to rehabilitative exercises and thus enhance the hip joint functional recovery of patients, improve activities of daily living among these patients and reduce their postoperative complications (Song-Nan et al., 2017)The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of pre and postoperative nursing intervention on clinical outcomes for patients undergoing hip replacement. Setting: The study was carried out at orthopedic departments at Menoufia University and Shebin El-Kom teaching hospitals. Subjects: A consecutive sample of 80 adult patients who were planned for hip replacement surgery were assigned randomly and alternatively into two equal groups, 40 patients for each group. Study group (I): exposed to the designed pre and postoperative nursing intervention along with routine hospital care Control group (Π): exposed only to routine hospital care. Instruments of the study: Four instruments were used for data collection Instrument I: - Structure interview questionnaire. Instrument II: - Visual Analogue Pain scale (VAS).Instrument III: - Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (HOOS).Instrument IV: Observational checklist.102gnificantly improvement in total knowledge score among study group (I) than control group (II) postoperative and follow up period. There was highly significant improvement of clinical outcomes (pain, activities of daily living and hip related quality of life and reduction of occurrence of postoperative complications) among study group (I) than control group (II) postoperatively. Conclusion Nursing intervention was effective in improving clinical outcomes among patients with hip replacement .Recommendation supervised health teaching regarding postoperative care should be given for hip replacement patients to improve their clinical outcomes (pain, activities of daily living and hip related quality of life and occurrence of postoperative complications).
