Abstract

Periodontitis can be defined as an infectious disease resulting in inflammation within the supporting tissues of the teeth, as well as progressive attachment, and bone loss.
Periodontal treatment should result in inflammation elimination, stop periodontal disease progression, enhance esthetics, and produce an environment which is useful to maintain periodontal health.
The first step in the treatment of periodontitis is mechanical debridement, which lead to disturbing the biofilm and reducing the bacterial load. The base of deep pockets of periodontitis in some cases are difficult to access for periodontal instrumentation. Meanwhile to improve its results, novel techniques had been proposed to be an adjunct to mechanical debridement, one of the proposed techniques was to use HA as an adjunctive treatment.
HA has several properties that linked HA in treatment of periodontitis. These different properties are its viscoelastic nature that aids in periodontal regeneration procedures. Moreover, it is hygroscopic in nature with large size molecule that aids in shock absorption and space filling. In addition, it is biocompatible, non-immunogenic in nature. Also, HA act as a scavenger by draining different bioactive molecules such as prostaglandins and metalloproteinases
So, in the current study we compared between HA as an adjunctive treatment for periodontitis patients stage II or III to SRP only regarding clinical & microbiological analysis.
Both groups showed significant improvement in clinical parameters and microbiological analysis after 3 months follow up, but with no significant difference between 2 groups.
