Abstract
Background: Early childhood caries (ECC) is the single most common chronic childhood disease, and its development is a global health problem. Conventional restorative approaches are usually unsuitable for young and apprehensive children and considered insufficient for controlling this prevalent disease. Arresting dental caries using silver diamine fluoride (SDF) has gained attention recently as an alternative approach for the management of ECC.
Aim of the study: To compare the effectiveness of application of 38% SDF solution and 5% NaF varnish with behavior modification of caregivers in arresting carious lesions in ECC.
Materials and methods: 140 children aged < 4 years old will be recruited from the Pediatric Dentistry clinic at the Faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University. After obtaining parental consent, baseline data regarding the children’s oral health will be collected. Children will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: group 1 receiving 38% SDF solution and group 2 receiving 5% NaF varnish, supported with Motivational Interviewing to caregivers. The arrest of active carious lesions will be measured after 6 months follow-up.
Analysis: Student t-test will be used to assess the differences between the two groups in the number of arrested carious lesions and regression analysis will be used to adjust for confounders.
