Abstract

Severe damages after previous earthquakes indicate that existing vertical irregular buildings are vulnerable to seismic hazards. However, irregular structures are designed using standard code requirements to get earthquake-resistant buildings, they will not perform as regular structures due to lack of ductility or ability to dissipate the seismic energy. Also, seismic design and damage assessment of reinforced concrete (RC) structures are changing from a force-based to a performance-based design to accommodate strength and ductility for the required performance objectives. In addition, the supporting soil flexibility under the raft foundation enables additional lateral displacements, while the current standard practice of structural design presumes that structures are fixed at their base. Thus, assessment of the inelastic seismic capacities of vertical irregular buildings is highly required, which depends mainly on the structural systems and their inherent level of irregularity, taking into account soil-structure interaction (SSI).
This dissertation intends to assess the seismic performance of mid-rise RC moment-resisting frame (MRF) buildings, which have two common types of vertical irregularity along their heights compared to regular ones. Also, this study extends to evaluate the response reduction/modification factors (R) for these buildings via obtained capacity curves using modal pushover analysis (MPA). In addition, the modified sections of the lateral load resisting systems (LLRS) are investigated to fit the recommended R factor of the vertical geometric irregular buildings.
