Abstract

Degenerative processes in TMJ and knee joint are believed to develop similarly. both are complex synovial joints; and therefore, share many epidemiological, clinical and physiopathological symptoms. Because of this, we are led to think that if there is a common etiology, at least a common pathogenesis occurs.
The current study was performed to evaluate the inflammatory and pathological effects of PS on TMJ and knee joint tissues.
We conducted the study on two groups of rats; a CTRL group and a PS group subjected to PS. Certain inflammatory cytokines, histopathological and ultrastructural features were evaluated. The results revealed obvious histopathological changes were observed in the articular cartilages in the TMJ and the knee joint of the PS group compared to the Ctrl group. These results indicate that PS has an effect on knee joint and verified the effects of it on TMJ.
Significant increase in TMJ tissues of the PS group when compared to the Ctrl group regarding three inflammatory mediators. On the contrary, there were not significant changes in the knee joint of PS group versus Ctrl group.
These stress- affected disorders should be taken into consideration in diagnosis and management of TMD patients.
