Abstract

Taxonomic studies, usually aim to collect a definite groups of insects and identify
their species in hope of finding a new species or at least a newly recorded ones in
geographical region .Family Pseudococcidae, which was chosen for the present study,
includes pests infesting various fruit crops, field crops and ornamentals.
The present study aimed to investigate some aspects of family Pseudococcidae. To
provide tools for recognizing and identifying species of this family encountered in Sudan
by collecting specimens from different host plants at several districts. Identifying the
genera and species of each specimen by using the specific keys, according to the specific
taxonomical characters such as number of antennal segment, number of cerarii, presence or
absence of minute denticle on the plantar surface of claw, the type of dermal pores and
ducts and their distribution on dorsal and ventral sides of the body.
Samples were collected from eleven states in Sudan. The study revealed that there
are six species of mealybug in Sudan, Ferrisia malvastra (McDaniel), Ferrisia virgata
(Cockerell), Maconellicoccus hirsutus (Green), Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley,
Planococcus citri (Risso), and Pseudococcus longispinus (Targioni Tozzetti). Two of them
were first recorded in Sudan, they are F. malvastra and P. longispinus. Each species was
described as a field and diagnostic characters, and a taxonomical key was provided for the
studied species.
F. malvastra (McDaniel), was selected for study by the scanning electron
microscope, as an example of the studied species to show some taxonomic characters in
detail.
The host plants and location of collecting are as follows:
1- F. malvastra (McDaniel), was collected from citrus seedling Citrus sienensis, and guava
trees Psidium guajava, in Khartoum state, and citrus seedling C.sienensis in Kassala state.
2-F.virgata (Cockerell), was collected from Maerua oblongifolia and C. sienensis in
Khartoum state.
3- M. hirsutus (Green), was collected from shrubs, on the stem and leaves of Hibiscus
rosa-sinensis, and Hibiscus sadariffa, in North Kordofan State.
