Abstract

Historical complexes are the evidence of the past. Some of these historical
complexes facing a continuous change in its urban tissue, this happen because of
rapid and uncontrollable urban developments and growth. The continuous change in
the historical tissue ignoring its context causes loss of architecture and social value
of historical setting which lead to destruction of its urban identity that comes out an
urban conservation problem.
The main goal of conservation is to enliven cultural properties by evaluating their
architectural, historical, environmental, visual, and aesthetic characteristics at the
same time there are new building technologies introduced by industrialization and
modernism. These inflexible conservation principal with the changes that happen
nowadays lead to either new building design in the form of imitation of tradition or
totally inharmonious with the surrounding.
This problem has been noticed at the period of revival styles. Although the details of
the new buildings of that time were derived from historic architecture, the way these
details were used, the scale and sometimes the structures and functions were alien
with the surroundings. The gap between old and new was noticed with modernism
within the period of 1950’s to1970’sas the result of introduction of industrialization
and technologies since the language of architecture had totally renewed.
