Abstract In all cases it was found that both medial and lateral heads of the gastrocnemius muscle received their arterial supply from the popletieal artery. The arterial supply to gastrocnemius was found to be type III in 20 cases (50% of cases). The rest of cases showed variable arterial supply type IVin 18 cases (45% of cases), and type I in 2 cases (5% of cases). In the 20 cases of type III there were two sural arteries, a medial sural artery for the medial head of gastrocnemius and a lateral sural artery for the lateral head of gastrocnemius. In the 18 cases of type IV the number of perforators to the medial head of the Gastrocnemius from the popliteral artery ranged between 2-4 vessels, and the number of perforators to the lateral head ranged between 2-3 vessels. The lateral head of gastrocnemius received its nerve supply from the tibial nerve and represents type I in 60% of cases, type II in 30% of cases and type III in 10% of cases. The medial head of gastrocnemius represents type III in all cases (40 cases) it received two branches from the same nerve trunk |
