Abstract

The majority of software system development processes are iterative and incremental, and they are never completed in one release. When developing software, the most important consideration is the selection of requirements to be included in a new system or the next update of an existing one. The users and stakeholders are involved in such decisions. The conclusion of these decisions is one of the most important problems when there are so many potential
requirements and so many stakeholders. It’s essential to consider this issue when stakeholders’ requirements are collected through digital conversations on forums or collected with web-based tools for requirement management. The current techniques of making decisions regarding requirements are inadequate for this case, as they cannot keep up with the high number of requirements and stakeholders involved. This thesis focus on how search-based software engineering (SBSE) optimization techniques are applied to deal with software requirement selection and optimization problem as well as the elicit phase for the next release problem. Search-based techniques have significant advantages in that they are robust, scalable, analyze trade-offs, and provide feedback to the decision-maker for choices clarification.
