Abstract

Studies have shown that psoriasis is a chronic systemic inflammatory disorder that can be associated with various comorbidities such as psoriatic arthritis, Crohn’s disease, metabolic syndrome, depression, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and coronary heart disease (CHD).
Biomarkers have become increasingly important tools helping to improve patient care. Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) is a stress-responsive member of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) cytokine superfamily.GDF-15 has a fundamental cellular response to inflammation and oxidative stress.
This study aims to assess the association between psoriasis, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease risk through evaluation of the serum level of GDF-15 in psoriatic patients.
The current study is a case-control study that included 80 individuals recruited from outpatient clinic of Dermatology and Andrology Department, Benha University Hospital.
All participants were divided into two groups: Patient group included fifty patients suffering from chronic generalized plaque psoriasis and Controls group included thirty apparently healthy, age and sex matched individuals.
All patients were subjected to Full history taking, clinical examination, calculation of PASI score and Laboratory investigations including: FBS, TG, cholesterol, LDL, HDL and GDF-15.
