Perimenopausal depression is a common and complex problem that carries an increased risk of morbidity and affects high sectors of women. Identification of perimenopausal depression is very crucial because proper detection and evaluation of it and prompt intervention can result in a healthy menopausal transition and hence healthy menopause leads to an improvement in quality of life.

Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional hospital-based study conducted at the Gynecology Department, EL-Shatby Maternity Hospital, Alexandria University, Egypt. About (55.4%) of all participants had a job, while (44.6%) were housewives. (87.4%) of all participants were married, (14.9%) of all participants had a high-income level, while about (48.6%) had a moderate level and about (36.6%) had a low-income level. About (13.4%) of all participants were nulliparous, while about (9.7%) were primiparous, and about (76.9%) were multiparous. (38%) were premenopausal, while (62%) were perimenopausal.
• Regarding perimenopausal women:
o About (20.2%) had (none or minimal depression).
o About (31.3%) had mild depression.
o About (27.2%) had moderate depression.
o About (12.4%) had moderately severe depression.
o About (8.7%) had severe depression.
The Perimenopausal women have significantly higher scores on PHQ-9 than the premenopausal group.
They also had significantly lower QOL scores in all domains of PWI-A. PHQ-9 total score has a significantly strong negative correlation to all domains of the PWI-A questionnaire.
