Abstract

Cultural Heritage within urban areas is the legacy and the wealth of resources inherited from the past generations. According to UNESCO, the definition of Cultural Heritage was limited to the tangible aspect. Recently, the definition of cultural heritage has grown to include intangible aspects as well as the historic context within which the Urban Cultural Heritage (UCH) exists. Being a fragile wealth, UCH is threatened by several factors. Therefore, the documentation of the UCH, its actual condition and its different tangible and intangible aspects, is substantial in order to maintain, preserve or even reconstruct in case of loss parts or the whole significant cultural heritage object. In order to obtain accurate and detailed documentation of the UCH, digital documentation techniques are used nowadays to capture the UCH’s significance. Along the digital documentation process, data concerning UCH is collected, processed, managed and shared.
Due to the interconnection between tangible and intangible aspects, an integrated approach for the digital documentation of UCH needs to be followed. This can be done using modern technologies like Historic Building Information Modelling (HBIM) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). HBIM and GIS are able to incorporate within the same digital environment both geographic and non-geographic data concerning the tangible and intangible aspects of UCH. This research will develop an integrated approach for the digital documentation of UCH. First, cultural heritage within an urban area will be subjected to study in order to understand its multi-dimensional and multi-scalar nature. This will be followed by a demonstration of how to use digital technologies to document and integrate the tangible and intangible aspects of UCH. Later, efforts and examples focusing on the application of the Integrated Approach for the digital documentation of UCH will be studied. Finally, the developed integrated approach will be applied taking the cultural heritage within the urban area of Souk Al-Midan (Alexandria, Egypt) as a case study.
