Abstract

Vitiligo is a common depigmenting skin disorder characterized by the selective loss of melanocytes which results in typical non-scaly, chalkywhite macules.
Our study aimed to assess the efficacy of microneedling combined with vitamin D versus microneedling with a placebo in the treatment of vitiligo.
This study was conducted on 28 patients diagnosed with vitiligo. The study’s participants were recruited from the Outpatient Clinic of Dermatology at Menuofia University Hospital, during the period from February 2021 to May 2022.
Two vitiliginous patches of nearly the same size were randomly selected within the same individual and each patch received different treatment for 6 sessions 2 weeks apart. The first patch was treated with microneedling in combination with vitamin D3, and the second patch was treated with microneedling with placebo.
Our study revealed that Patch A, in which vitamin D was added to microneedling, yielded variable degrees of repigmentation in 42.9% of cases. Of these, 28.6% showed satisfactory repigmentation (G1) while 10.7% demonstrated good repigmentation (G2), and only 3.6% experienced very good repigmentation (G3). Unfortunately, (57.1%) of cases had poor repigmentation (G0). None of our patients exhibited excellent repigmentation.
In patch B where microneedling was used with placebo, 35.7% of cases exhibited varying degrees of repigmentation. Among these, 14.3% of cases showed satisfactory repigmentation (G1), another 14.3% showed good repigmentation (G2), and only 7.1% showed very good repigmentation (G3). However, the majority of cases (64.3%) demonstrated poor repigmentation. No one of the studied patients experienced excellent repigmentation.
Eventually, Microneedling is a promising potential treatment option for vitiligo. Findings from our study indicate that there was no significant difference between the degree of improvement observed in cases treated with microneedling alone and those treated with microneedling in combination with vitamin D.
