Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal the architectural space’s essence and identify the aspects of user-architectural interaction. This raises several questions, such of space how to reveal the essence of architectural space, how to identify interactive architectural space, what architectural space aspects can be used in the evaluation of architectural gems, and what are implied as novel conservation parameters. This is significant for both academic and professional levels as this multisensorial and cognitive interaction of users with architecture is significant for the assessment of value in architecture. In this study, a qualitative approach was taken, and IPA or interpretative phenomenological analysis as a research method. The sample was a group of 13 experts in architecture mostly with a Ph.D. Degree and professors of architecture who were consulted. Then these experts conduct semi-structured interviews. The data from the interview was transcripted and coded, and then a process of horizonalization of each significant statement was undertaken to make all answers hold the safe weight value. The data was then classified into themes and encrypted into meaning blocks which afterward led to the rearrangement of themes. Finally, the data was presented textually and graphically. The findings of this study elicited the architectural space DNA in other words the essence of the interaction between humans and architectural space. It showed three main threads of themes temporal aspects, sensorial aspects, and cognitive aspects. The first is only about the ambiguous nature of time for architectural space DNA. The second included the following architectural space aspects: interactive visuality, interactive odor, interactive sound, interactive temperature, and interactive tactility. Finally, the cognitive thread included: architectural space Memory, Architectural space meaning, architectural space emotions, and architectural space experience. These findings had both practical and academic implications. The application of the study in real-world settings might require further investigation. It is suggested that three areas of architecture should benefit from it: The first is the theory and practice of architecture. The second is the discipline of conservation in architecture and the establishment of value. The third is in the metaverse’s new field of architecture for the senses.
