The aim of the current research is to investigate the impact of using Geographic Information Systems in teaching the Principles of Cartography course on the development of map reading skills, spatial thinking, and geographic sense among Geography Department students at the Faculty of Education. To achieve the research objective, a list of map reading skills, spatial thinking skills, and dimensions of geographic sense was prepared. Additionally, an instructional guide for teachers and a student book were developed to enhance map reading skills, spatial thinking, and geographic sense. Moreover, tests for map reading skills, spatial thinking, and dimensions of geographic sense were prepared. The experimental method was employed in both the experimental and control groups, with pre- and post-application of the research tools. The researcher used the equivalent group method, with the experimental group consisting of 20 students from the second year of the Geography Department who studied the Principles of Cartography course using Geographic Information Systems. The controlling group, also consisting of 20 students from the second year of the Geography Department, studied the same course using the conventional method. The results showed that the use of Geographic Information Systems significantly contributed to the development of map reading skills, spatial thinking, and geographic sense among second-year students in the Geography Department at the Faculty of Education. The research recommends the need to encourage the study of Geographic Information Systems within the teaching methods courses in education faculties. It also suggests training students, faculty members, and teaching assistants on using Geographic Information Systems in teaching geographical subjects to acquire the necessary skills and competencies for successful implementation in teaching.
