Abstract

This study is based on lithostratigraphy and microfacies analysis and stratigraphical investigation to conclude the depositional and sequence stratigraphic framework of the Miocene rock units along the Cairo-Suez Road. The studied depositional sequences of the Burdigalian-Langhian age can be differentiated into two main stratigraphic units; A lower siliciclastic unit revealing lagoonal (intertidal lagoons, intertidal estuarine), and inner ramp facies, termed as Gharra Formation, which lies unconformably over the Oligocene continental sediments of Gebel Ahmar Formation. This unit is conformably overlain by the middle Miocene marine-nature sediments of The Genefe Formation, revealing middle, to outer ramp facies. This depositional sequence was initiated as a result of the Miocene Sea-level advance over northern Egypt. A sequence stratigraphic analysis was carried out to identify the depositional evolution of the Miocene rocks within the Cairo- Suez district. The suggested model is based on the transgressive/ regressive system which is proposed based on the litho-and microfacies analysis. Accordingly, five depositional transgressive-regressive sequences were identified in the studied sections within Cairo- Suez district.
