Abstract

The most common type of TMD is TMJ ID. ID denotes the abnormal position of the joint disc in relation to the mandibular condyle and articular eminence. With MRI techniques, it has become possible to detect inflammatory changes in the TMJ and studies have shifted to focus on synovial fluid changes. The detection of changes in synovial fluid and pathologies enhances our understanding of the internal disorders that affect the TMJ. So, this analytical cross-sectional study was carried out to evaluate MRI radiological findings if they are correlated to clinical symptoms of TMJ ID.
Our study was carried out 31 patients with TMJ ID (62 TMJs), defined according to the inclusion criteria, who attend at Suez Canal university hospitals and fulfill the inclusion criteria.
Including, patients more than 18 years old, with history of orofacial pain referred to the TMJ (defined as pain with jaw movement or during mastication), TMJ noise (defined as any joint noise during opening or closing), or presence of jaw locking or mouth opening limitations (defined jaw opening limitation severe enough to interfere with the ability to eat). Excluding, patients with history of facial bone fracture, with previous face surgery, with contraindications to MRI examination as presence of metallic prosthesis or artificial pacemaker.
Each participant was subjected to full history, clinical evaluation, and MRI scan (1.5 Tesla MR scanner (Philips medical Systems, Achieva 1.5T A-series).
Our study results have revealed that the mean age of the studied sample is (30.37 ± 5.329 years), ranged from 22 to 41 years, the majority of participants 24 (77.4%) were females, while only 7 (22.6%) were males, regarding the clinical finding in the studied sample, it was found that bilateral joint affection seen in 80%
