Abstract This study was conducted on sixty epileptic children aged three to sixteen years (thirty four males, twenty six females). They were divided into three groups; twenty epileptic children on Valproate (VPA) monotherapy, twenty epileptic children on Carbamazepine (CBZ) monotherapy and twenty epileptic children on VPA and CBZ polytherapy. The control group consisted of twenty healthy children aged three to sixteen years (twelve males, eight females).Estimation of plasma level of glutathionei peroxidase enzyme i(GPx),i assessment of plasma level of isuperoxide idismutase (SOD)iand estimation of plasma level of malonyldialdehyde (MDA) had been done. Studied epileptic children had plasma GPx activity that was significantly higher and plasma SOD activity that was significantly lower. Studied epileptic children receiving polytherapy had significantly higher MDA plasma levels than those receiving CBZ or VPA monotherapy. Additionally, the MDE level was significantly higher in the VPA monotherapy group compared to the CBZ monotherapy. |
