Abstract

Aalexithymia refers to a condition where an individual has challenges recognizing and expressing emotions. There are three fundamental aspects that define alexithymia: difficulty describing feelings; identifying feelings (DIF) and distinguishing between feelings and the bodily sensations of emotional arousal, difficulty describing feelings (DDF) to others, constricted imagination and a stimulus-bound, externally oriented cognition. Literature has shown that alexithymia has a bidirectional role in the development of depression. Spirituality being the subjective interpretation of personal beliefs and behaviors that influences individuals’ perception of the surrounding environment, has a long history of impacting the quality of life and the overall wellbeing of a person both physical and mental. Even though spirituality and religiosity overlap, there is a clear distinction in the following a certain prescribed code of conduct and practices among those who follow a certain religion. The association between mental health especially depression and abiding by official religious codes (religiosity) and personal modes of transcendence (spirituality) is a widely studied phenomenon. Increased spirituality and religiosity has been extensively shown to be protective against depression and improve general mental well-being. During their training, medical students face multiple stress- inducing factors that are demanding in a fast-paced environment that potentially places their mental health at risk. Most stressors are inherent to the school setting such as coping with a highly demanding curriculum, being away from home, coping with new relationships among other factors. The onslaught of such adverse elements can be detrimental to the overall well-being of learners including their cognitive and physical health. Our cross-sectional study aimed to measure the prevalence of alexithymia as a psychological construct among undergraduate students at alexandria university school of medicine and to study the association between Alexithymia, depression, spiritulaity and religiosity as culture sensitive parameters among the study group.
