Abstract

This dissertation studies the poetry of Ciaran Carson (1948-2019), who was born in Belfast City in Ireland, as an example of resistance literature. Carson’s poetic works assert how he resists the English colonial power in his country. He endeavors to make his nation’s voice be heard and restore his lost Irish culture and history that was suppressed by the colonial power. Thus, this dissertation is divided into an introduction, three chapters, and a conclusion. The introduction introduces Carson’s life, his poetic collections, and the contemporary poets whom he connected with. It also sheds light on the critical reception of his poetic achievements. Chapter One examines the theory of resistance as it was one of the most important theories in the 20th century. The chapter, thus, examines resistance literature through the critical achievements of Ghassan Kanafani, Barbara Harlow, Homi K. Bhabha, Frantz Fanon, and Edward W. Said. Chapter One also discusses the history of the invasion of the British authority against Ireland. Chapter Two tackles Carson’s poetic volumes that deal with resistance themes, such as hybridity, exile, nostalgia, belongingness, national identity, and emancipation. Chapter Three unravels Carson’s poetic strategies, such as his deployment of Irish oral tradition, cartography, flaneur figures, prose poetry and haiku poetry; along with employing the tactic of fugue, and the strategy of representation. He also makes use of symbolism, and music, besides his employment of words as objects, proper nouns, and intertextuality. The conclusion sums up the findings of the dissertation. The study affirms how Carson’s poetry aims to subvert colonial writings and proclaim his national identity as an Irish citizen.
