Abstract
Background: Infection prevention and control are challenging in most health care settings, and rising rates of elderly infectious diseases are a major concern for patients and health care professionals. Aim of study: the study aimed to assess nurses’ roles in prevention and control of infection among elderly group at Beni-Suef University hospital. Design: A descriptive design was used to achieve the aim of the current study. Setting: The study was conducted in surgical departments and surgical outpatient unit at Beni-Suef university hospital. Subjects: A convenient sample of 100 nurses working in surgical departments and surgical outpatient unit at Beni-Suef university hospital who accepted to participate in the study. Tools of data collection: Two data collection tools were utilized in this study namely; Socio-demographic questionnaire sheet, and Nurses’ role regarding infection control and practices for elderly Observational Checklist. Results: majority of the studied nurses had satisfactory practice regarding gowning and gloving and the total practice. More than three quarters of them had satisfactory practice regarding aseptic hand hygiene and wound care. Conclusion: There is a highly statistically significant relation between the total practice and nurses’ years of experience while there were no statistically significant relation between the total practice and their ages, gender, and training courses. Recommendations: Periodic assessment for nurses’ roles in prevention and control of infection among elderly group at Beni-Suef University hospital, providing sufficient training for nurse’s performance about infection control.
