Abstract

An introductory to show applications of nanotechnology in water treatment and removing heavy
metals which can result in significant threat to both environmental and public health due to their toxicity,
carcinogenic effects, non-biodegradability and subsequent biomagnifications. Nanomaterials such as
nanometal oxides (NMOs), nanocomposites and graphene/graphene oxide nanosheets are powerful
adsorbents for metal ions due their unique physical and chemical properties including; porous surface,
large surface area and intrinsic surface reactivity. Developing new chemically modified nanocomposites
based on graphene oxide (GO) and magnetic graphene oxide (MGO) exhibit higher adsorption capacities
toward heavy metal ions as well as organic dyes. In addition, ion imprinting polymers (IIPs) can display
selective removal of certain metal ions from multi-ion contaminated water samples. Furthermore,
Utilizing microwave-assisted adsorption would enhance the adsorption capacity of solid nanosorbents.
